Medical devices for patients with obesity
Specialist article by Prof. Dr. Christine v. Reibnitz,
published in “Heilberufe” 06/25
The number of obese people with a body mass index (BMI) ≥ 40 is rising rapidly in Germany. However, care facilities, clinics and hospitals are often still inadequately equipped to deal with this. Beds, toilets, chairs and walking aids are usually not suitable for the strain caused by heavy people.
There is a high demand for specialized aids, as standard solutions are often insufficient. Technical support for positioning, transfer and mobilization is essential to ensure patient safety and at the same time relieve the burden on nursing staff.
In her article in Heilberufe (issue 06/25), Prof. Dr. Christine von Reibnitz explains which aids are necessary, how they should be used and what consequences a lack of equipment can have. Obesity is not only a medical challenge, but also a challenge in terms of healthcare strategy – with a significant impact on the quality of care and costs in the healthcare system.
